Psychodiagnostic Assessments

A clear diagnosis and a treatment direction for adults who've been struggling without a full explanation.

In-person psychodiagnostic assessments in Halifax, with some sessions available online anywhere in Nova Scotia.

"I've done the therapy. I've tried the medication. Something still isn't adding up."

People come to us for psychodiagnostic assessments for all kinds of reasons. Years of therapy that never got at the right thing. A few diagnoses over time that don’t add up to the whole story. Relationship patterns that keep repeating. A sense that trauma is doing more than you thought. You just want to know what’s going on and what’s most likely to help.

A psychodiagnostic assessment helps us understand what’s driving it, so you know what to treat and which approach is most likely to work.

Let’s start with a conversation.

Psychodiagnostic Assessments | Halifax & Membertou, NS

Why Choose A Psychodiagnostic Assessment?

Symptoms overlap. Trauma can look like anxiety, mood can look like personality, and attention problems can hide underneath both. When you’ve been treated for one thing and haven’t improved, the problem is often that nobody has looked at the whole picture. A psychodiagnostic assessment does that.

Using a detailed clinical interview, gold-standard diagnostic interviews, and well-established personality and psychological assessment tools, your clinician looks at your symptoms, history, and patterns of functioning together. The goal is a clear diagnostic picture and a case conceptualization: what’s going on, what’s driving it, what should be treated first, and which approaches are most likely to help.

Not sure this is the right assessment? Our intake team will help you find the right next step.

Psychodiagnostic Assessments | Halifax & Membertou, NS

A Psychodiagnostic Assessment Can Identify:

Depression, persistent low mood, and mood swings that haven’t responded to treatment the way they should. We sort out what’s mood and what’s something else.

Generalized anxiety, panic, social anxiety, and worry that’s tangled up with other concerns. We find out what’s driving it.

Trauma that’s been shaping your symptoms without ever being named. We look at how past experiences connect to what you’re living with now.

Intrusive thoughts, compulsions, and patterns that get mistaken for anxiety or perfectionism.

Long-standing ways of relating, coping, and reacting that keep causing the same problems. Personality inventories like the MMPI-2 or PAI help make sense of them without judgement.

Feeling detached, losing time, or not quite present, which often goes unrecognized alongside trauma.

More than one thing at once, with symptoms that seem to cause each other. We untangle which is which and what to treat first.

For adults who’ve been given different labels over the years and never felt any of them explained it. We check what still applies, what doesn’t, and what’s been missed.

Why Choose East Coast Psychotherapy & Trauma Clinic For A Psychodiagnostic Assessment?

We take a broad differential approach, looking at how symptoms, personality, trauma, attention, mood, and anxiety overlap and interact. You leave with a diagnostic formulation and a treatment direction, rather than just a label.

Your assessment battery is chosen for you. We don’t run the same set of measures on every client. Gold-standard diagnostic interviews and well-established personality tests and psychological measures are selected based on what you’re dealing with.

Every assessment ends with a 60- to 90-minute feedback session. Your clinician explains what each tool measured, what the results showed, and how the diagnostic criteria were met or not met. You won’t be left to interpret the report on your own.

Your report names specific therapy approaches that fit your presentation, whether that’s DBT, ACT, CBT, EMDR, ISTDP, IFS, or EFT, and points you to therapists and clinics who offer them. Many clients hear about evidence-based options they’ve never tried.

If therapy or medication hasn’t worked the way you expected, the assessment looks at why. That might mean a diagnosis that no longer fits, a condition that better explains things, or two concerns happening at once.

When appropriate, the assessment can provide documentation to support workplace or school accommodations, disability claims, or other formal needs.

Our Psychodiagnostic Assessment Process

Step 1: Get in touch

Call us or send a message through the contact form for our Halifax or Membertou office. Our intake team follows up within two business days.

Step 2: Talk with intake

A brief intake interview to make sure a psychodiagnostic assessment is the right fit. You’re added to the waitlist, and we’ll tell you how long it’s likely to be.

Step 3: Clinical interview

A two-hour appointment covering current concerns, history, past diagnoses, treatments you’ve tried, and what you hope to learn. Screening questionnaires are emailed to you to complete online.

Step 4: Targeted testing

A two-hour appointment for assessment measures chosen for your concerns, such as a personality inventory. Breaks and pacing adjustments are built in for attention, anxiety, fatigue, or sensory needs.

Step 5: Diagnostic interviews

A two-hour appointment for semi-structured diagnostic interviews. Collateral information from someone who knows you well may be requested but isn’t required. Complex assessments may need an extra testing or interview appointment.

Step 6: Review and report

Your clinician integrates the interviews, questionnaires, testing, and any collateral information, then writes your report with your supervising psychologist’s oversight.

Step 7: Feedback

A 60 to 90 minute session, in person or online, to go through the findings, diagnoses, and treatment recommendations. You leave with your report and a clear plan for next steps.

Questions About Psychodiagnostic Assessments

People often use the terms interchangeably, but they’re different things.

A psychodiagnostic assessment is the full process of figuring out whether you meet the criteria for a mental health condition.

A personality test is one type of measure that looks at your traits and coping style. Common ones include the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-IV), and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2).

A personality inventory is often part of a psychodiagnostic assessment, but on its own it can’t diagnose anything. It’s the interviews, the questionnaires, and the clinical judgement together that get you to an answer.

Fees range from $2,250 to $4,050 depending on scope and complexity. Your intake team member will confirm the expected cost once we understand what’s needed.

Typically 8 to 10 weeks from your first appointment with your clinician to your feedback session and final report, depending on complexity and scheduling. The first appointment is often several months from the intake call, and we’ll give you a realistic estimate when you call.

Yes. Your report from East Coast Psychotherapy & Trauma Clinic includes individualized treatment recommendations, which may include specific therapy approaches like DBT, ACT, CBT, EMDR, ISTDP, IFS, or EFT, practical strategies and resources, a recommendation for medical consultation, further assessment if needed, and specific local therapists or clinics to get you started.

That’s common. A psychodiagnostic assessment can confirm whether an existing diagnosis still fits, whether another condition better explains your difficulties, or whether more than one concern is happening at once.

This is common. The assessment can help explain why previous treatments didn’t work as expected, whether something important was missed, and which approaches or providers may be a better fit going forward.

A psychodiagnostic assessment in Halifax isn’t only for severe or complex concerns. It’s useful when symptoms are persistent or hard to make sense of, when you’ve tried therapy or medication without the improvement you hoped for, or when you’re unsure what’s really driving the problem.

Many people come to us after years of therapy without the change they hoped for. Others want clarity before starting so they don’t spend time and money on an approach that doesn’t fit. The assessment identifies what’s driving your difficulties and points to a focused treatment direction. Many people also find it validating to have their experiences understood in context rather than symptom by symptom.

A diagnosis may or may not be part of the outcome. Even when criteria aren’t met, the assessment clarifies what’s contributing to your difficulties and still provides individualized recommendations for treatment and next steps.

A comprehensive written report with your findings, diagnoses, relevant test results, clinical impressions and case conceptualization, and personalized treatment recommendations, including therapy approaches, medication consultation when appropriate, and referrals. A feedback session is included to review it together.
