Therapy in Membertou, NS
Trauma-focused therapy for Cape Bretoners of every age, from a clinic that started here and understands here.
In-person therapy at our Membertou clinic, and online psychotherapy anywhere in Nova Scotia. Evenings and Saturdays available.
"I've been telling myself I'm fine for a long time."
Around here, people are good at getting on with it. You keep working, keep showing up for your family, keep saying you’re okay. But the thing underneath doesn’t go anywhere. It shows up at night, in the short fuse you don’t have anymore, in the way you’ve stopped calling people back.
Our Membertou therapists take the time to find out what’s really going on, so you can stop managing it and start living again.
Let’s start with a conversation.

Approaches We Use at Our Membertou Location
Nobody here works from one script. Our Membertou therapists are trained in a range of evidence-based approaches and choose what fits you, then adjust as you go. Depending on what you’re working on, that might include:
EMDR Therapy
The approach our clinic is best known for. It helps the brain finish processing memories that got stuck, so they stop carrying the same charge. Several of our North Sydney therapists offer EMDR in person and online.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Practical work on the thoughts and habits keeping you stuck, and what to do differently.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
A trauma-specific approach that targets the beliefs an experience left behind.
Mindfulness-Based CBT
Combines mindfulness with cognitive work, for the thought loops that won’t quit.
Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)
Gets underneath the reaction to the feeling driving it, in individual and couples work.
Gottman Method
Research-backed couples work on trust, conflict, and closeness.
Attachment-Focused Therapy
Sex Therapy
Talk therapy for desire, intimacy, and sexual concerns, on your own or with a partner. Learn more about sex therapy.
Exposure Therapy
Step-by-step work toward what you’ve been avoiding, for anxiety and phobias.
Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP)
The go-to approach for OCD, taking the power out of compulsions.
Somatic & Body-Based Approaches
Somatic psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing, and Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST) for what the body has been holding, and for dissociation.
Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST)
Complex Trauma Therapy
Paced, phased work for trauma that built up over years, often starting in childhood.

Why Choose East Coast Psychotherapy & Trauma Clinic in Membertou?
Trauma Is Our Specialty
Plenty of clinics are trauma-informed. We built this one to resolve trauma, not just help you cope with it. Coping skills are part of the work, but the goal is for the thing itself to lose its hold.
We're From Here
Beth Toomey opened this clinic in Membertou and lives a rural Cape Breton life herself. Our team knows the communities, the culture, and how much it means to get real help without a four-hour drive.
No Waiting List
We run this practice so people aren’t left waiting. Most new clients have a first appointment within two weeks of intake, and if we’re full, we’ll say so up front.
No Session Limit
Real change takes the time it takes. Treatment here is shaped by you and your goals, not by a number on a benefits form.
Evenings, Saturdays, & Online
Weekday, evening, and Saturday appointments at the clinic, and online therapy anywhere in Nova Scotia. If you’re in Baddeck, Chéticamp, or Ingonish, video saves you the drive.
Bring the Dog
We’re a dog-friendly clinic. If your dog helps you feel settled, they’re welcome at your in-person appointment. Just give us a heads-up!

How Therapy Works at Our Membertou Clinic
Our team is here to help you feel safe, heard, and understood, with therapy that’s caring, culturally inclusive, and gender-affirming. Here’s how it goes:

1. We get to know you
It starts with a free consult with our intake team. Then your therapist spends the first sessions understanding your history, what's going on now, and what you want to be different.

2. We build a plan together
You and your therapist decide what to work on and how, using the approaches that fit you. You'll always know where you're headed.

3. We stick with you
Regular sessions, in person or online, for as long as they're useful. We check in, adjust, and keep going until the change holds.

How do I book a therapy appointment?
Why is the consult with intake and not a therapist?
Because intake knows the whole team. They can hear what you need, answer your questions, and match you with the right Membertou therapist on the first try.
How soon can I be seen?
We don’t keep a waiting list. Most new clients get a first appointment within two weeks of intake, and we’ll tell you up front if that’s not possible.
What does a session cost?
Between $185 and $225 for 50 minutes, depending on your therapist’s discipline. Couples therapy sessions are 90 minutes and billed for that time. Full details are on our fees and policies page.
Do you direct bill?
Yes, for CAF, VAC, RCMP, and NIHB. For personal plans, you pay at your appointment and submit the receipt to your insurer.
Can I get an assessment in Membertou?
Our mental health assessments for ADHD, autism, learning, and diagnostic questions are completed at our Halifax clinic. Interviews and feedback can be done online, and intake will walk you through what that looks like from Cape Breton.

Weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays. Sessions are available in person and online.
Still have questions? We're happy to answer them.
