Why You Can't Just Get Over It
Trauma goes beyond feeling upset or experiencing difficulty in your life. Trauma is an overwhelming experience that your brain can’t handle at the time it is happening. When this occurs, in the simplest explanation – our brains skip over the emotional process needed to handle what has happened and creates a block or a loop in your mind. This is why trauma can make you feel like you’re stuck. So when you tell yourself (or someone else tells you), “What’s in the past is in the past” or “It was a long time ago, it’s time to move on” this doesn’t address what happened and is the reason why you can’t just “get over it”.
Even if your trauma is decades old, processing what happened can be highly beneficial to living better now.

Uncategorized physical symptoms
Also knows as somatization. Somatization refers to the manifestation of physical symptoms that have no clear medical cause. This can include symptoms such as chronic pain, gastrointestinal issues, or headaches.

Hypervigilance is a state of heightened alertness and awareness of potential danger. This can cause individuals to be easily startled, have difficulty sleeping, and be constantly on guard.
Feelings of Guilt or Shame
Trauma survivors may experience feelings of guilt or shame, even if they were not responsible for the traumatic event. These feelings can be overwhelming and interfere with daily life. There can also be a negative change in self-perception, including feelings of worthlessness or self-blame.
Difficulty with intimacy
Trauma can make it difficult for individuals to form close, intimate relationships or deepening relationships that are important to them. This can be due to a fear of vulnerability or a fear of being hurt again.

Questions About Trauma Therapy
What is considered trauma?
Clinical interns are graduate students completing the supervised practicum portion of their training. Our current interns include a counselling therapist intern finishing a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University and a third-year Doctor of Clinical Psychology (PsyD) student at Université de Moncton. Both work under the close supervision of a registered psychologist.
Who is affected by trauma?
Every intern is supervised by a fully registered psychologist. Cases are reviewed regularly, and treatment planning and clinical documentation are closely supported, so your care benefits from two clinicians working together.
What is cPTSD?
$112.50 per 50-minute session. The fee is fixed, so you always know what to expect. Full details are on our fees and policies page.
Are trauma and PTSD the same thing?
Our counselling therapist intern is accepting new adult clients now. Our intake team will give you an honest sense of timing when you call.
What are the symptoms of someone affected by trauma?
Yes. Reduced-fee sessions are available in person or by secure video anywhere in Nova Scotia.
Is it possible to heal from PTSD?
That’s fine. If your needs change or you’d like to move to one of our registered therapists, your intern and intake team can help you make the switch without starting from scratch.
